Piotr
Sikora

Piotr
Sikora fled Krakow, Poland then a communist state, under martial law
in 1982. He
initially settled with his mother in mid-town Manhattan, but it was
clear, even at 14 years of age, that Piotr was not the type of person
to stay in one place for very long. He took off for the streets, and
roamed as a nomadic street kid for several years before finally finding
a home in the culturally rich and artistically diverse Lower East
Side neighborhood of Manhattan. After growing disenchanted with the
requisite table- waiting jobs and corporate paper- pushing, Piotr
began to take an interest in exploring his creative side.
Impressed with the work of such iconic modern photographers as Richard
Avedon, David LaChappelle, and Jean Baptiste Mondino, Piotr thought
he might find a suitable venue for expressing himself in photography.
He picked up his first camera at an East Village Flea Market, and
chanced into a meeting with another one of his idols: Celebrated international
photographer Bruce Weber.
Weber advised Piotr to work his way into the business by taking a
position as an assistant, and he left Piotr with a piece of advice
that has continued to influence his work to this day: In order
to become a great photographer, you need to find out who you are as
a human being, and show yourself through your photos. Piotr
dove headlong into his new passion, putting in long days as an assistant
to photographers he would meet through photo-lab flyers.
He learned the ins-and-outs of the trade as he worked, and it eventually
paid off: Piotr scored his first gig shooting the cover for the debut
issue of London-Based culture mag True. In the years since, Pitor
has served as the Photographer-in-Chief for Vibe magazine, and has
done countless shoots for a myriad of major international magazines,
record labels, and advertising agencies.
In 1998, Piotr expanded his interest in photography to the motion
picture world: His oeuvre now includes several music videos for acts
both in the U.S. and abroad- Piotr prides himself on his versatility
both in his craft and his personal approach to life. He is a firm
believer in traditional photographer, for example, but he is still
able to make the most of todays ever-changing technology; he
is also multi-lingual and has traveled extensively for his work. Piotr
now lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife and newborn son.
