Mark Seliger

Mark Seliger was born in Amarillo, Texas and moved to Houston when he was five years old. He attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts there and later graduated from East Texas State University.

Mark worked as a photographer’s assistant in Houston for several years before moving to New York. Seliger began freelancing for Rolling Stone in 1987 and in 1993 became the third chief photographer in the magazine’s history, following in the footsteps of Annie Leibovitz, who was one of Mark’s early influences. Also, as a photographer for Us and Men’s Journal, he has shot more than a hundred covers.

In 1996, Seliger completed a two year project of documenting Holocaust survivors. The photographs culminated into his first book entitled, When They Came to Take My Father, Voices of the Holocaust. His latest book, Physiognomy, was published in 1999. His images from these books and other Rolling Stone stories have been exhibited around the world.
Mark Seliger started shooting for Rolling Stone in 1987. Since 1993, as chief photographer for Rolling Stone and also photographer for US and Men's Journal, he has taken over 100 covers and done hundreds of feature stories. His work figures prominently in the best selling books Cobain, Images of Rock and Roll, and Crazy, Sexy, Cool. In addition to his magazine work, he has shot high-profile ad campaigns (for Gap, Nike, Wrangler, Fuji, and IBM), television commercials, and award winning music.
His photographs of musicians and celebrities have won various awards including the 1999 Alfred Eisenstaedt Photography Award for a Single Image, which was given for a portrait of Ben Stiller.

Mark Seliger currently lives and works in New York City.
