Michael Lavine

Upon graduation from Evergreen University in Olympia Washington in 1985, Michael Lavine moved to New York City. Continuing his studies in photography, he received a B.F.A. at Parson's School of Design. Michael defined his unique style of distorted perspective, saturated colors and extreme lighting techniques while immersing himself within New York's underground music scene. His distinct approach quickly became sought after by such notable bands as Sonic Youth, Iggy Pop, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Smashing Pumpkins, and The Beastie Boys. The editorial, advertising and entertainment communities soon picked up on his unique approach. His list of clients includes Elektra Entertainment, Universal Records, Def Jam Records, New York Times Magazine, Esquire Magazine, ESPN Magazine, Raygun Magazine, IBM, Compaq, Sony, ABC Television, and Fox Broadcasting.

Michael has a photography column, "Iconographs" which appears monthly in Raygun Magazine, where he photographs emerging talents in the film and art worlds. His personal work is exhibited at the Team gallery in New York where he has had two solo shows and is currently working on his third for the winter of 2000.

He has received awards from Communication Arts' Photography and Advertising Annuals each year since 1992 as well as American Photography, Art Director's Club and PDN.

Michael resides in New York City's Greenwich Village with his wife
and two daughters.
